Comcast Makes $90,000/Three-Year Commitment to Cool Girls, Inc.
Funding Creates Service Learning Opportunity for Hundreds of Local Girls
Atlanta – Cool Girls, Inc. received a $90,000 commitment from the Comcast President’s Fund in February 2006 to support the Service Learning Program of Cool Girls’ award-winning self-empowerment approach. The funding commitment will be paid over three years.
Cool Girls is beginning its 17th year of serving girls who live in disadvantaged Metro Atlanta communities. Cool Girls offers a holistic, multi-pronged approach to provide the tools to help girls face the issues of – poverty, racism and sexism. Cool Girls is different from other girls serving organizations by serving only girls from low-income communities; offering each girl the same comprehensive program including the tutorial and technology program, life skills and physical fitness development, mentoring, summer camps and field trips; and its programs are site-based, going into existing sites like schools to work within the community. Cool Girls has received national and local recognition including Oprah’s Angel Network, the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation, The Greater Atlanta Community Foundation, and the DeKalb County Chapter of 100 Black Men.
“Comcast is proud to partner with Cool Girls to provide opportunities for young girls in the Atlanta area,” said Michael Hewitt, Vice President/General Manager Comcast Cable, Metro Atlanta System. “At Comcast we pride ourselves on not only being in the community, but being a part of the Community. This partnership with Cool Girls is just one example of our commitment to the communities we serve.”
The Comcast commitment extends beyond financial with volunteer hours dedicated over the next three years by local employees. The Service Learning Program, an interactive, hands-on learning program focuses on community involvement, leadership development and self-determination, was launched in the Fall of 2004. Eighth grade girls have been the only participants to benefit from the Service Learning program. Cool Girls serves girls, ages 8-14.
“Having Comcast as a corporate partner in such a big way will allow us to expand the service learning program to all of our deserving girls and offer this invaluable experience at our eleven school sites in DeKalb and Fulton counties,” said Cool Girls CEO Kimberly N. Sutton, Ph.D. “We are excited about the impact this partnership will have on our mission.”
